Welcome to this week’s Hundred Years Ago Show. If you enjoy this weekly presentation, please note that I’ll be doing The Hundred Years Ago Show live during the 2023 Mark Steyn Cruise – along with many other favorite features from SteynOnline and The Mark Steyn Show. More details here.
November 1922 opens with formal confirmation of what has been known for some time: the Ottoman Empire is over, and its last sultan is to be consigned to the trash can of history along with the emperors of Germany, Austria and Russia. On the other hand, is a lost pharoah about to make a spectacular comeback?
Also on today’s show:
~If you thought the end of Boris Johnson’s political career was pretty pitiful, you should hear what happened to his great-grandfather.
~Who would want to take out London’s top policeman with a Walnut Whip?
~And the sands of time run down for Riddle of the Sands man Erskine Childers.
Plus all the other headlines from Kansas City to Cloncurry – and the sounds of the era from backporch ballads to Russkie raves. Click above to listen.
If you’re intrigued by Mr Childers’ fate, you can find out more in the annotations to my audio serialisation of The Riddle of the Sands in Tales for Our Time.
Thank you for your kind comments on The Hundred Years Ago Show. Terry Barker, a Florida member of The Mark Steyn Club, writes of last week’s edition:
Mark, I am grateful to you for all aspects of your work. Would that I could repay you with contributions of equal value but, alas, I was not born with your talents. Expression of appreciation will have to do.
I soaked up today’s Hundred Years Ago Show with deep delight, especially the music. Funny, it made me imagine how much Mussolini–ogre that we imagine him to be–must have loved his country. Thank you for today’s show and so much more.
Steady, Terry. But it is true, I think, that a chap such as Mussolini’s pathologies are considerably less weird than those of the fellows who afflict us today. He and Stalin and Mao knew what a woman is, for example.
As with our audio adventures, video poetry and musical specials, we’ve created a special Hundred Years Ago home page in handy Netflix-style tile format to enable you to set your time machine for the precise week or month you’re in the mood for.
The Hundred Years Ago Show is a special production of The Mark Steyn Club. As we always say, Club membership isn’t for everyone, but, if you’re interested, you can find more information here.
Programming note: Tomorrow morning at SteynOnline please join us for a special edition of The Mark Steyn Show. That will be followed by a brand new edition of Steyn’s Song of the Week on Serenade Radio at 5.30pm Greenwich Mean Time – 12.30pm Eastern. Wherever you are on the planet, you can listen live by clicking the button at top right here.
Details of all Mark’s regularly scheduled TV and radio shows each week can be found on this page in the right-hand sidebar.
