I’m going to start putting up information about growing your own vegetables as the supply chain disruptions will make food more expensive. Growing vegetables is something anyone can do even in apartments but your space, climate and time constraints will always dictate what is possible. I think I’m going to aim for either a educational video or link to books at least once a week.
This week I found an old 1940s era film giving the basics of a “victory garden’ which was a way families were told to deal with rationing and shortages during WWII. It seems appropriate (unfortunately) for today. Has some good information on the exact design of a garden that is productive – but it’s aimed at suburban dwellers who don’t have HOAs telling them what they can and can’t do on their lawn. It’s still a good introduction to planning gardens for bad times even with some dated information.
As a bonus here’s a British version that is aimed at apartment dwellers. Not as heavy on information but notice some good tips in there like growing sprouts in saucers.
I’ll be posting pics of my Victory Garden on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/oldtimeypistolero/
