As supply chain disruptions run their course the end result is scarcity of goods. We all know this but in the first world, where we have such abundance that disruptions can be hidden for months, it’s hard to internalize that there are shortages. Even after lockdowns, inflation and years of cities being burned down our stores are still basically full – at first glance. Perceptive shoppers have noticed items in stores that aren’t be restocked or are being restocked with cheaper, smaller portions. Over the last few weeks I’ve been making note of that I’ve seen becoming scarce and what others have told me they’re not finding.
This list may not be accurate to you depending on your location but I provided it as a service to keep you informed on what items you should be stocking up on if you need them.
Certain types of feminine hygiene products. Tampons and sanitary pads come in a variety of “sizes” for lack of a better word. I’ve heard women are having a hard time finding their preferred brand and type. These items are very necessary for prepping with women or young girls.
Imodium and the type. Diarrhea medicines used to be sold in different sizes and bulk 96 packs were commonly available. Now all the stores around me only sell 24 packs. I checked because it was taco night. But seriously it’s something preppers need because diarrhea is deadly if untreated. I store some in my preps and was buying more because it expired.
Baby formula. I can’t speak to this but I’ve seen articles and heard from people this is becoming a big deal. If you have any formula you don’t need that’s still good see if food banks will take it as it’s becoming harder to source.
Sunflower oil. Oils have short shelve lives but not so short you shouldn’t buy a little if you see it. In my area a lot of vegetable oil has either disappeared or gone way up in price.
Vegan proteins. Crop yields have gone down every year for at least a decade and as commodities go up and meat plants shut down the demand for ingredients for vegan fake meats is going up. Because vegan food is actually not particularly popular you’ll find the Beyond meat goop on shelves but the grocery chains are warning that come fall there will definitely be shortages. So if you are or know a vegan keep this in mind
Eggs. There’s a chickens shortage so there is an egg shortage. Prices are skyrocketing in my area. Eventually they will be gone. You can’t store eggs but egg powder is storable if you can find it. Also some protein powders like MP Combat have egg allium in it and stores for years so you can get vital animal proteins.
Clothes and shoes. Your favorite brands are experiencing disruptions. My wife and I have had a hell of a time finding hiking shoes and other things like that. Shoes in particular are something you need to have extra of.
Seeds. If you garden you noticed that seed prices have gone up and seed variety has gone down. Save your seeds!
Some calibers of ammunition. Ammunition companies are being hit hard by inflation and supply chain issues. They are prioritizing the most popular calibers. Good luck finding new self defense ammo for that 16ga you have laying around and my precious .327 ammo is unavailable anywhere. If you have a gun and the ammo for it is available lay it in deep especially if it’s not a common caliber.
That’s just the main things I’m noticing now. If you notice something becoming scarce let me know at https://www.instagram.com/oldtimeypistolero/
