This week President Trump’s global shake-up has come into sharp focus. He stunned allies by saying he’ll meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon in Saudi Arabia to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war. He has doubled down on his plans to displace Palestinians from Gaza. Less clear is his approach towards Iran. Last week, Trump signed a directive “restoring maximum pressure” on the country. This is the same way he described his first-term Iran policy after ordering America’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA, meant to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Now, Trump is signalling he’s open to reaching a new deal with Tehran. Vali Nasr and Elliott Abrams are former State Department officials who have served under Democratic and Republican presidents. They join Christiane to discuss this issue.
