Elon Musk, the sole director of Twitter, has directed company’s engineers to work on a Vine reboot, which could be ready by the end of the year, multiple sources told Axios.
On his Twitter account, Chief Twit Musk posted a poll asking users if they thought Vine should be brought back, with the caption, , “Bring back Vine?”.
Several users responded to the poll with their thoughts. As one user put it, “I think it would be a great idea to bring back Vine. It was a great platform for creative content and I think there is still a lot of potential there”
“What, basically Twitter had TikTok 10 years ago (Vine) with 200 million users and shut it down. Stupidest thing they ever did, from a business POV. It was awesome,” another user commented.
Vine was a Twitter-owned six-second looping video clip sharing platform. In 2016, the company discontinued the Vine app service, replacing it with Vine Camera, which allowed users to shoot 6.5-second looping videos.
Vine was acquired by Twitter in October 2012, and as of 2016, the app had over 200 million active monthly users, with over 1.5 billion loops viewed since its inception.
Elon Musk briefed Twitter employees in his first direct call about his plans for the platform once he takes over, including making it more like TikTok and allowing “outrageous comments.”
However, Tesla CEO Elon Musk clarified that such remarks should not be amplified.
Musk told Twitter employees that if the platform is to reach one billion users, it needs to become more like TikTok.
Meanwhile, the Chinese short-form video app TikTok has become a key news source for its users, with 33% of its US users now regularly getting their news from the short-video app, up from 22% in 2020.
