Three years after a strange killer disease swept the globe, the world has begun to move on from COVID-19. The Biden administration announced it will end the public health emergency on May 11, while the U.K. has shut down its COVID-19 app, previously required to prove vaccination status on entrance to certain public spaces. But the impact of COVID-19 is staggering to contemplate. Official estimates say the virus caused more than one million deaths here in the U.S., and seven million worldwide.
Yet this is an underestimate, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci. The real death toll could be as high as 20 million, and without the vaccine it could have been double that number. Dr. Fauci was undoubtedly the face of the COVID-19 response in his capacity as chief medical adviser to the President. Christiane meets with him in New York, where he was awarded the prestigious Calderone Prize from Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.
