“We are the bridge on all those sorts of issues where the Republicans have no other bridges, so maybe we should put up a toll road and make them pay to come across,” says John Dennis, the libertarian-leaning Republican candidate currently running to unseat Rep. Nancy Pelosi. “We are the bridge to the millennials. I don’t think there is any question about that.”
Dennis has spoken in favor of same-sex marriage, would like to abolish the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, and Education, and is seeking to repeal the Patriot Act. He also supports the decriminalization of marijuana. “I’m not telling people to go out and smoke pot,” Dennis explains, “but if you do, it’s your choice and your responsibility.”
This election marks Dennis’ fourth campaign against the former Speaker of the House. While the prospect of success against Pelosi may be grim, Dennis says he always “runs to win.”
Reason TV’s Nick Gillespie caught up with Dennis at the Lincoln Labs’ Reboot Conference, held July 18-20 in San Francisco, California, to discuss Nancy Pelosi, the liberty wing of the Republican Party, and what it will take to reach millennials.
