This is a quick one today – just a list of things I’m buying now in preparation for inflation, shortages or anything else. I understand the constraints most people have with budgeting but putting a few of these things away per shopping trip if possible is a good idea. There are also some bigger purchases here you need to think about if you need them, or if you can afford them.
Salt and Sugar. Both are still relatively cheap but sugar is already being rationed in some areas. Salt and sugar both never go bad, can be used in food preservation and will be getting more expensive.
Baby formula or alternatives. I don’t need it but if you do it’s worth mentioning that there is a shortage of formula in the US that has led to rationing. I’m not sure how to replace this if you need it but parents will need to think about this.
Shoes. If you hike around as much as I do, or if you just are foreseeing hoofing it more due to gas prices (which will not be coming down anytime soon) it’s time to get extras of any footwear you need. I tend to need sneakers for walking, and in the summers I putter around in sandals. I bought extras of both. Supply chain issues and material shortages (some footwear is made with petroleum byproducts) mean if you wait until you need them they might not be there.
Clothes. Like shoes, your jeans, socks, shorts and undies are only available anytime you want because of a functioning supply chain run by cheap gas. I grabbed extras of each and bought some pants and shirts in a size or two below where I am just in case food security gets worse. My jeans are Magellan brand (a Academy Sports and Outdoors house brand) and run about $20. I usually get a year or so out of them and you can order them online so…
Pet food. At my local Costco I just saw a worker tell a guy they were out. Obviously you can only store this so far ahead but pet food is starting to disappear. Now’s the time to get extra and start thinking about alternatives including storing food for you that you can share with your pets, since most animals ate table scraps until commercial pet food was available. It was invented in 1860 by the way by a guy named James Spratt who say stray dogs eating old hardtack left on the docks. Lard was also once something people feed dogs.
Bikes and scooters. The used bike market has exploded as people realize that having a gasless means of transport might be a good idea. Scooters and moped prices are also up though in my area not much because they are considered the vehicle of choice for people who got their licenses suspended for DUI. Some scooters get 90 miles to the gallon though. The prices for these aren’t coming down so if you’re in the market pull the trigger ASAP
Food. This is a no brainer. Food prices are going up double or triple digits so buying sooner rather than later will save you money. I’m not just talking about long term beans and rice survivalist food either. Your time to enjoy a nice steak or salmon is going to be over sooner than most people realize. Coffee and other luxuries are also becoming hard to find or afford.
New electronics. I’m guilty of waiting too long on this myself. Chip shortages and logistic problems mean electronics are getting more expensive. While for most people most electronics are a luxury a good working phone will be important if crime picks up nation wide. Get while the getting is good on TVs. computers, peripherals etc.
Mason jars. Getting rare and expensive around me, but I think lots of us are going to be using them more. For apartment dwellers they also make storing dry beans and rice easier. I personally prefer Ball brand.
Self-defense items. Last but not least if you’re looking to finalize these purchases do so now. If you’ve decided on firearms (which I recommend) guns and ammo are available but still not plentiful. If you have other ideas, almost all weaponry and pepper sprays etc are flying off the shelves. If you’re doing research hurry up, if you need advice let me know. But I know gun sales have picked up again and my local shops are still having problems getting ammunition and reloading supplies.
Just my two cents. Want a third? Let me know on Instagram
